Buddy's Burrito & Taco Bar (Brooklyn, NY)
Score: 7 / 10 Reviewed by: jimothy3000
Buddy's Burrito & Taco Bar is a laid back Mexican take-out joint in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, and well worth the short subway ride out if you happen to be in downtown Manhattan. If you've been used to eating Manhattan burritos at Manhattan prices (11 bucks for a below-average burrito), you might want to take a couple klonopins on the train before getting here-- it will break your mind. And this is but one of several decent Mexican joints in this immediate area.
The burritos come with barbecued pork, shredded chicken or beef, carne asada or chipotle shrimp. I had the shredded beef and it really hit the spot with a nice smoky flavor. For 8 bucks you can get "El Grande", which is "so big they make it TWO 13" flour tortillas". And they weren't kidding about that. The black beans and rice were very well spiced, and the lettuce and tomatoes tasted fresh although stuffed over on the side.
Of special note are the extras they have on the counter. FOUR types of incredibly delicious homemade salsa-- hot and mild red and green sauces-- and a bowl full of sliced jalapenos. And believe me, finding extras like these are very rare in the city.
On the down side, this is one of those places where they heat everything up at the beginning of the day and let it simmer for the rest of the night in a pot. That can be just fine for the beans and a lot of other things, but that kind of attitude doesn't work as well for guacamole. Their guac was kind of runny and not that well done.
I got this to go and they wrapped the burrito up in foil for me. It's a good thing I had a backpack, because this was one heavy burrito. Damn--
