Zona Rosa gets a bad rap. It seems like everyone who complains about it used to live in the Mission. That's right--it's not a Mission taqueria. Instead of hipsters, you'll be avoiding pierced teenagers from Marin who like to sit on the sidewalk and pretend they're homeless. But it's worth going to. The ingredients are good; they make the burritos fast, and they stay together very well.

If you're already in the Haight and feel like a burrito, check this place out. If you want the best burrito, go to the Mission.

I was excited to try Zona Rosa after moving to an apartment two blocks away. If there is one thing a neighborhood should have, it’s a good burrito joint for fast-quick fixes. Zona Rosa from the exterior seemed like it would fit the bill if the general crowd that usually fills the place is any indication.

One evening, a few weeks after moving in, I was craving a burrito so I ventured over to Zona Rosa. I got far enough into the door to read the menu and discovered how pricey they were. I felt insulted. Like they took me for a dumb schmuck who never had eaten a burrito before and therefore could charge an arm and a leg. I think I muttered “Are you f***ing kidding me?” and walked out.

Well, after about 6 months of walking by the place every day, I thought maybe I’d been a bit unfair. It seemed like a popular place after all. Maybe their burritos were so good they were worth the jacked-up cost...

Nope. The burrito was insult to the injury of my wallet. It was edible, but barely.

Zona Rosa is an expensive burrito. It tastes good if you haven't been to San Diego in many moons, though. The big positive for me about this spot is the way you order your food. You walk up to a spread of fresh ingredients and get to handpick what you want in your burrito. Forget the menu prices! When you walk into the door and you know what you want, and dont want on your burrito, just order it and know your are going to spend at minimal $11 for a burrito and a drink. I dont really like that they steam the tortilla instead of grilling it, but I do like that if I do order a burrito I can go heavy on the meat and put the rice and beans on the side, how it is supposed to be. I really hate that if you order a burrito, they wrap it in foil. As a matter of fact, they double wrap it in foil. It is a total waste, especially if you are eating inside. Also, if you are wrapping your burritos in foil that means you put too much inside your tortilla or, you cant properly wrap the tortilla. I often have to use the chips for scraping together the last bits of the burrito because it always explodes due to the excess of filling. If you are from the Midwest or New England youd love this place. But, if you are a California resident, especially a native of SoCal, you might be disappointed with the lack of authenticity of the burrito.

This is one of my favorite taquerias in SF when I'm in the mood for a tasty junk food burrito. I love their super bean & cheese burrito sans pico de gallo, sub hot green sauce. It's not too wet and it's not too dry. The rice in particular is fluffy while the rest of the ingredients melt together in perfect yumminess. I could live on their green hot sauce, but it's so hot it makes me hiccup.

The chips can be slightly scary at times... like, you need to pat the grease off of them with a paper towel. But otherwise, they are quite yummy.

I... don't recommend you use their bathroom. Trust me. You'll see things you don't want to see.

ps. They have Coke in old school glass bottles, which I also find endearing.

Hard to beleive this place can stay in business. I guess it being in a tourist trap keeps the light on.

The biggest indicator that this place is fundementally flawed is they use fake cheese - some kind of Velveta type product. Yuk. That is all you need to know. Used to have a location in Berkeley as well.

    Yes, go to Cucos.

This was also my first SF burrito and I can no longer stomach it. I live in the neighborhood and never come here. It is very expensive, cash only, no avocado, tortillas are steamed and the quality of the meat is just awful. Saving graces are: home made chips & the super veggie burrito, which is much cheaper than anything else on the menu and if you get it with refried beans and throw it in the oven for a few minutes so the cheese actually melts, is pretty good. However, if I wanted a microwavable burrito, I could get one for much cheaper at Safeway, so I rarely bother to stop in. Not worth it.

This was the place I ate my first true SF burrito over 16 years ago. At the time I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. I had never tasted anything so fresh and delicious in my life. Fast forward 16 years... I have eaten 1000s of burritos since, and the Zona don't hold up well with what I now expect from a great taquaria. I'm not saying that the place sucks, but it simply doesn't rise to the level that numerous other burrito places in the city rise to. On a side note, the enchilatas plate is very tasty.

I ordered the vegetable burrito and thought it was just okay. The burrito was large and filling, but the vegetables left something to be desired. They were rubbery as the woman put the vegetables in the microwave before putting them in my burrito. Next time, I will get just beans and rice and save a couple bucks and lose the rubbery sensation inside the burrito. I will have to try the plantain burrito at Cuco's in lower haight. For vegetarians, zona rosa is not the place, unless you are starving and just need something very filling.

I used to eat here a lot when I lived in the Haight, but that was over 10 years ago, so I thought I should go see if they are still as I remember before submitting a review. I had a super chicken burrito with extra guacamole (I remembered that I really liked their guacamole). The chicken was grilled to perfection, charred enough for a good smoky flavor, but not burnt. It could have used more pico de gallo; however, the guacamole is so delicious that I didn't really care. Otherwise, the blend of ingredients was just about right.

A friend of mine, who lives near Zona Rosa, recommends the California burrito with added guacamole. It doesn't have rice in it and that, in her words, "leaves just the good stuff."
