From the outside, Cuco's does not look like much. But inside are some people who really know how to make a burrito. While i'm not as thrilled about this place as some other reviewers, it's never the less worth a look if you're in the area.

My brother ordered his burrito at Cuco's with the spicy peppers, but without any of the red sauce. La mujer working behind the counter smirked at him, and I riposted, "El es un nino, no un hombre." She laughed and agreed. I ordered the same pollo asado burrito, with "Un poco del rojo"; she scoffed and called me a child also. Earlier, Bro had warned me that too much of the red sauce was a recipe for gastrointestinal disaster, so I was okay with the dis.

In no uncertain terms, Cuco's plantain burrito is the best vegetarian burrito in the city. Maybe the world. Okay, that last part was hyperbole, but it is my favorite vegetarian burrito. It’s also a burrito that could satisfy even the most stubborn carnivore.

Going to Cuco's is like visiting your mother's living room, if your mom made kickass burritos and gave you a solid dose of loving snark every time you came home. The place is family-owned, and more often than not the kids are sitting in the front doing their homework. Everyone in the Lower Haight comes here at one point or another, to catch up on gossip, see friends, get a good-natured joshing from behind the counter, and chow down on some serious burritos.

All of the reviews I have read are out of there mind. This place was not good at all, I tried all of the meats they had available, Carne Asada, Both pork dishes, and the chicken. and none of them were Fantastic or even good to say the least. I found a hair in one. The chicken was ok, but for the prices, there are many many better places to go than this place. This is a NO GO!!!

Imagine if you could physically step back into your mother’s womb, that’s what a Cuco’s burrito is like. At this point in the burrito quest (up from L.A.), my friends are all burrito-ed out. So I double park the car with the flashers on and run inside Cuco’s. I order the Plantain Burrito that I have heard so much about. The woman who I believe to be the creator of Cuco’s smiles and pulls a fresh unpeeled plantain out of the food storage area. Everything is made fresh, to perfection. I opted for black beans. Eating the burrito was something of a blur… the complicated blend of flavors… the sour cream in particular… the clearly Salvadorian hot sauce with the fresh chips… Is this a burrito? I don’t know what to call it, but I will be back, and you should try it. This may have been a dream. But I’m pretty sure it was real. Seems like owner operated burrito joints are less common in S.F., but Cuco’s is a definitive example of one of the great owner operated burrito creations.

I used to live right near Haight and Fillmore and good Lord I visited this place all the time. Now, I am visiting SF in 2 weeks and, no lie, I am DREAMING of my first veggie burrito in 2 years from this place. Last time I visited it was the weekend.. I traveled by bus to get there only to find what I had forgotten. Cuco's is CLOSED ON THE WEEKENDS. :( Heartbroken, I grabbed some Indian food from Naan and Chutney (great indian food btw). However, this time I will not forget the hours.
There are so many things about Cuco's that makes for and excellent burrito. The fresh ingredience. The abundance of cilantro and liquidy sour cream that saturates the entire burrito. The hot sauce (in small doses for Me). The damn good pinto beans. The homemade four/corn torilla chips. The SIZE of the burritos. And last but not least the owners. They are so kind, and the fact that you see the same people every time makes the experience that much better.
Give it a shot.. It's SOOO sooo worth a quich trip to the Lower Haight.

Wow. I heard about Cuco's from this site, but was skeptical at first. I didn't even think I liked plaintains. But given the rave reviews, I thought I would give it a try.
I don't know what to say... Having grown up in SF, I thought I knew all there was to know about burritos, but the plaintain burrito completely blew me away. The combination of sweet and spicy is like nothing I've ever tasted, and mindblowingly delicious. And the portions are gargantuan. The tortillas were great, the cheese fully melted (cheese and plaintains -- again, two things I wouldn't expect to go well together, but it totally works), and the salsa nice and spicy.
The one disappointment was the guacamole (hence the 9.5 instead of the 10). I'm going to try asking for sliced avocado next time, though, so maybe that will take care of it.
Rather than rehash what everyone else has already said, I'll just say that words can't do this burrito justice. Check it out for yourself.

I went to Cuco's based solely on the reviews on this site. I was not let down. I had the spicy (green sauce) pork burrito. It was fabulous! The pork had an amazing rich pork flavor. It wasn't carnitas - which is usually what I go for - but I would actually pick the spicy green stuff in a line-up. It was extremely tender even though it looked tough. It melted in my mouth. The beans and rice were perfect. The hot sauce was very spicy, but it also had a lot of flavor. The burrito was huge and fat.
The only problem is that the service was slow. I waited in line for twenty minutes when there were only three customers in front of my. The woman that runs it is very motherly and friendly.
This one is worth crossing a bridge for.

Cucos is very good but it is not a 10. I think the massive size of their burritos shocks people into worshiping this place. Excellent salsa. Dynomite guac. They do a perfect black bean super veggie. Meats are about average for SF, but excellent from a global perspective. If you are stuck inthe Haight, do not miss it.

Everytime a friend from out of town rolls around I make it a point to take them to Mama Cuco's. Her food is amazing, especially her super burritos. They cook with fresh whole-food and pack every burrito full. You're easily getting two pounds of tasty, burrito. At first, when you walk in you might question the feel, but don't let it fool you. That's only to scare away the white folk and they're, actually, very clean and friendly. I've been coming in regularly, now, for about a year, and despite her sly remarks towards my whiteness, I've earned her respect for the spice! She can still put me in my place, though, so watch out if you have a sensitive stomach. Otherwise, handsdown, Cuco's is the best deal for the most taste in town. If she moved next door I'd put my kitchen up for rent.

The plantain burrito with salsa picante. The best burrito I have ever had. The woman there still chuckles and asks if I'm sure I want hot sauce when I order it. Maybe after half a dozen more visits or she will accept me.
Let's break it down: fresh ingredients including plantain that is fried on the spot when you order it. Always well-integrated. An incredible taste mix of spicy, savory and sweet. Enormous size - this is one of the biggest burritos I've ever had. And a price that can't be beat ($5-something). It's a religious experience.

Cuco's is a friendly Salvadoran taqueria that serves great comfort food. It feels like an old standby, even if you've only eaten there a handful of times.
The plantain burrito is definitely a standout, even if it is a long wait. I don't remember enough about the meats to comment, but the smoky black beans, fresh pico de gallo (beware the spicy!), and creamy sour cream make for a very memorable vegetarian burrito.
Cuco's is one of the more distinctive taquerias in the city, and is certainly worth a visit. Get a burrito to go and enjoy it across the street at the Toronado, a beer bar that is another one of the city's unique treasures.
