I'm from Ohio but being in the Navy I've lived all across the country for the past 12 years (RI, SC, FL, MD, and San Diego). I never knew how glorious burritos could be until I came to San Diego ... forget the sour cream, all you need is meat and guac. One thing has puzzled me for several years however: I have never had tortillas anywhere else in the country as good as the ones in San Diego. There something distinctly different about them ... what is it???
Oh yeah the Breakfast Burritos here are awesome. That and carnitas are the two things I get every time.

I agree that the california burritos are good, but Santanas is not worth 9's and 10's. Its convenient and open late, but prices vary by employee sometimes and you can also end up with some weird meat. 80% of the time I have had good food. Also the hot-sauces/salsas can be a little watered down, or just slightly off.
"Was the taqueria clean and modern, or old-school and greasy?"
Please stop calling these places taquerias... damn northern californians :)

As I write this review, I hate to admit that I am no longer a resident of San Diego. But no matter how far I go from there, my heart will remain there. My stomach is fully devoted to Santana's.
Whenever I am in town, I HAVE to have a burrito from my FAVORITE place in town.
I would recommend Santana's to anyone and everyone one. The California burrito rocks!

I live about 2 minutes away from this Santanas, It's by far one of the best and most consistant taco shops in San Diego. Im a big patron of the carne asada but the california burritos are wonderful too. The staff is really friendly and if your going through the drive through they usually get you through pretty fast. I dont think i can remember a time where they messed up any of my orders either, and ive had some pretty extensive orders. Regardless, the burritos themselves are pretty juicy and the carne asada is really good. (not over or undercooked). I always seem to get a healthy amount of guacamole too. So if your in the area definately hit it up.

Great food. This is what I miss about San Diego burritos that you can't find in any Bay Area taquerias; the marinade they use for the carne asada. Maybe I just haven't found a spot, but I can't place what ingredients these SD taquerias used for carne asada. I used to go here about 5 miles out of the way from my house in OB to get their famous California Burrito. Most of the time I'd just head to the OB Roberto's, but this place was good as well as consistent. Friendly staff too.
