Local Flavor's burritos are probably the best value for money in Morning Side Heights. For 5 bucks you can get a chicken burrito (a dollar more to add fresh guacamole) that will fill a very empty stomach. The meats are well marinated and seasoned, if a little bit wet. I prefer the chicken but the steak is worth a try for variety's sake. The guac is fresh. On the creamy side. The highlight though is the hot sauces. Local Flavor offers two home-made choices, prepared by the Chef whose moniker is actually "Hot Sauce." I don't even know his real name. Local Flavor offers "Sweet Heat," a milder Jamaican-inspired hot sauce, and "Brain Freeze," a super smokey medium/hot hot sauce. Brain Freeze is one of the most flavorful hot sauces I have tried. It is earthy, smokey, light on the vinegar. I think they are going to begin bottling and selling the hot souce out of the burrito shop.
Local Flavor is a non-profit benefiting folks from the area soup kitchens and homeless shelters. It is currently only open Tuesdays and Thursdays for Lunch, like 11--3 or thereabouts. I think they are going to open up more days soon. You should check it out if you are hungry and want to benefit a good cause.
