This place saved us from hunger on a recent visit to the Bay Area. We tried to go to the locations in the SF Mission, but with two small children in the car, a) couldn't find parking or b) too long of a wait. El Farolito on 24th and Mission is my all time favorite burrito, and I was jonesing. Luckily we found this location. In fact, I think the guy behind the counter was one of the same folks who worked there when we still lived in the city.

Anyhoo, on to the burrito. Same style as the other locations, except they have lettuce and sour cream by default now? Requested no lettuce, so no prob. (lettuce in burritos is an abomination). These silver bullets were HUUUUGEE!!! And they DID NOT DISAPPOINT. Same beans, rice, green salsa, real avocado, and yes GRILLED tortilla. Oh, how I miss you, slightly grilled tortilla. Come to papa and make love to my mouth. Thank you, oh yes, thank you.

And the tangy cheese. OOOOOOHHHH!! THE TANGY CHEEESEE!! I'm guessing its just jack cheese, but makes the whole package.

I was so glad we found this location. SO if you are having a jones and don't want to deal with the hectic city nonsense, make a detour to the SSF location in the heart of downtown, very sleeply, lazy feeling, relax and have yourself one of the best burritos in the world.

In my desperation for Bay Area burritos, I have people bring them to me when they are coming to visit. Beggars can't be choosers, so I accepted the burrito brought to me from El Farolito. Mind you, I reheated it in the microwave over 24 hours after it had survived an 8-hour Greyhound bus ride, and then was forgotten in a backpack a few hours longer while we had celebratory reunion beers.

I ordered a super carnitas. They only offer pinto beans. All the ingredients were well dispersed, and I felt the burrito had been constructed with loving care. None of the individual ingredients was a major stand out. But the cheese meltage into the tortilla was a winner. I?ve had a similarly trekked-to-LA-from-SF burrito from Taqueria San Francisco, and even under those conditions, Taqueria San Francisco?s deliciousness still shone through stronger than this one. But El Farolito is faithful, the kind of place that would never consider putting lettuce in a burrito.
