I just got food poisoning from eating a beef taco salad from Taqueria San Jose, in Modesto, California (Briggsmore/Prescott) and had to be hospitalized after puking for nearly 10 hours and being massively dehydrated. I also suffered from diarrhea and abdominal pains, fever and loss of sleep since it occurred over night. I did not have anything else to eat that night nor the afternoon prior. The doctor I saw said the staph infection I got is protein source related. The sickness came 2-3 hours after eating the taco salad which the doctor said sounds right. I will be sure to never eat there again and warn others of my experience. I would give them a zero if I could...

It's strange to me that people seem to have such up and down experiences in Taqueria San Jose - I've been going there for years and never had anything but the tastiest burritos. Sure, they're a bit of a grimy spot, but the luscious food more than makes up for it. Their meat is like a little explosion of joy in your mouth, and everything has always seemed fresh in the other ingredients. They also have a great salsa bar with free chips. Their salsa fresca is amazing!

But the best thing there: the Wet Burrito. It's the same as any other burrito there but covered in their wonderful red sauce, which is not as spicy as it looks but is extremely flavorful and good.

Funny. I've eaten there many times and never gotten food poisening nor seen the bloody mess described in another review found here. The only problem I had was the fact that my stomach couldn't stand up to the sheer volume of the burrito! And for the price, it's astounding!

I find that the carne asada is exceptionally tastey, and when you get down to the bottom where all the juices and sour cream collects in the half hour it takes to get there, it's almost unbearably delectible. This is in my top ten burrito shops in the Bay Area. It's unfortunate that people have bad experiences there. I'll just say though, if you think the sanitary conditions there are atrocious, do yourself a favor and never eat in other countries.

Based on the scoring guidelines, I say 7.

I grew up going to this place in my younger days. If your from out of town and looking to try out a new place, I wouldn't recommend this one since it's surrounded in a rough area and you'll probably think it's way too dirty. It's just one of those places better to order "To Go." If you could look past the grime, this is a decent burrito usually stacked with alot of meat. The burrito is rapped tight and just has a good taste to it. Chips & Salsa are great. I wouldn't go back to this place just because of the cleanliness. There's much better choices around the area.

I take back my 8.5 review, and I stand corrected for criticizing a prior reviewer for complaining about this place being dirty.

Tonight, a woman behind the counter was rooting through the trash to dig out beer cans for recycling. That's fine, but she didn't wash her hands before taking my order, making change, or passing the order slip to the cook.

The guy who handed me my burrito had a dirty rag on his arm.

I rarely complain about dirty restaurants, but this was too much. I was too appalled to say anything, so I walked out. For the last time.

No disrespect to the previous reviewer, but this is, by far, the singularly WORST taqueria EVER!

Craving a burrito and wanting to try something new, we strayed from our perennial favorite taqueria which is down the street from San Jose. BIG mistake. First, let's start with the cleanliness factor - FILTHY! The floor was filthy. The tables & chairs were filthy. The walls were filthy. Behind the counter was filthy. The ceiling? You guessed it – filthy. But worst came when we got our food and sat down in the dining room. From my vantage point, I could see into the kitchen. There, next to the meat slicer, was a very large mound of bloody, fatty meat scraps, much of which was stuck to the wall and overflowing onto the floor.

It must be said that I’m willing to endure grotty if the food is exceptional, but in this case the squalid conditions were enough that we vowed never to return. This is a place where the threat of food poisoning hangs palpably in the air like the mist of a sneeze.

The food only added insult to injury. We ordered a wet chicken burrito. The sauce, if you can call it that, was bitter but otherwise tasteless. The grilled chicken should have been called dehydrated pollo – dry, hard, & fatty, (if such a combination is possible). The tortilla - steamed and gummy. The beans - mushy. The rice - dried out and chunky. The sour cream - runny and room temperature. There was lettuce in the burrito. Lettuce! Wilted, stringy iceberg? Blech. We also ordered a carne asada quesadilla, very hard to screw up, but somehow they did so with flying colors - greasy cheese and charred, inedible beef. Again, blech. Their tortilla chips, greasy and stale. Their salsa bar – see above about the grottiness.

I would rather eat at Taco Bell than ever step foot in San Jose Taqueria ever again. PLEASE avoid this place at all costs!

This is one of the best, slept on, Taqueria's in the Bay Area. They are extremely generous with the meat, sometimes a little too generous, but nevertheless, they make a great burrito. Make sure that you have both hands free because you'll need it. The Carne Asada is good but the Al Pastor is the one to try, if you're a pork eater. If red meat isn't your thing, try the shrimp burrito, mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
