Taqueria San Francisco (San Francisco, CA)

Score: 8.5 / 10    Reviewed by: Dan

Some people would say that it's pretty egotistical to name your taqueria after a city that's known as the top burrito spot in the world. If you're gonna proclaim that kind of greatness, you really should be able to back it up. I'm happy to say that Taqueria San Francisco does that, and more.

This place has the best carne asada I've had in San Francisco; marinated, grilled to perfection, with just a touch of that wonderful charred/smoky flavor. It's as good as La Costena's was in the glory years of the early 1990s, and that's saying something. Al pastor is a great choice, as well. Other meats are pretty good, but do yourself a favor and go with asada. Recently, the pastor has been a bit flavor-deprived.

Of course, a meat choice is sometimes only as good as the burrito that surrounds it, and here's where San Francisco really shines. Grilled tortillas, gobs of cheese so well-melted that it stretches out like the topping on a well-done pizza. Onions and cilantro are well-represented, and the salsa is both fresh and spicy. Beans are solid, and all three standard varieties are quite good. The rice is nothing to sneeze at, and they scatter big chunks of avocado hither and yon throughout each burrito.

They don't make 'em much better than that. Add in the pickled jalepenos and jar of super-hot pico on each table, the friendly service, the football (real football, not American football) on the screen, and the constant flow of happy customers who all seem to know each other, and you've got a very good taqueria.
