Tio's (Ypsilanti, MI)

Score: 2.5 / 10    Reviewed by: Chris

This was my second burrito in the Ann Arbor area. My friends tried to warn me... but noooo, I said i had to do a first-hand review. For once, i wish i'd listened to them.

Tio's has a few locations around the Ann Arbor area. This one is in Ypsilanti, just outside the eastern edge of Ann Arbor. It's bright, open late, and clean. That's pretty much the end of the good points. It's more of a sit-down restaurant complete with servers and utensils than a real taqueria.

I ordered their `carnitas pork' burrito. When served, i thought they had given me a quesadilla. It was literally as flat as a pancake warm tortilla. It had no foil wrapping, and clearly would have disintegrated had i tried to use my hands. So i was forced to eat it like a barbarian. I poked at it, and the first cut revealed the horror: it was 90% refried beans. There was no rice, no sour cream, no guac, no salsa. Only bits of cheese and onions and meat could be found. The meat itself wasn't bad, if only it weren't drowned by these blasphemous canned refried beans.

Pre-burrito, we were served a big basket of chips and salsa. The medium salsa had some nice flavor, while the spicy had a minor kick but less overall flavor. Chips were a bit on the salty side, but otherwise nondescript. The side of guacamole was ultra-smooth and, like the salsa, wasn't bad. And yet, i wished i'd stopped at the chips.

Tio's burritos are basically overlarge versions of Taco Bell's bean burritos, but with a bit of meat. If you like Taco Bell, you might like this. But there no way can this be considered a proper burrito. Simply awful.
