Taqueria Los Primos (San Mateo, CA)
Score: 6 / 10 Reviewed by: Chris
This is yet another place along San Mateo's `burrito row'. It's at the far north end of B street, surrounded by several other taquerias and meat shops. It's a decent place. With some care it could be quite good.
I ordered the super burrito, carnitas. It was packed with plenty of tasty juicy meat, nary a piece of fat or gristle. Nicely done. The tortilla was nicely grilled- mottled but not dried out, and the burrito was solidly built. However, the ingredients were not mixed well. There were alternating regions of hot meat and refridgerator-cold sour cream and cheese. The promised guacamole was missing altogether. At $5.50, these burritos are reasonably priced. There is plenty to eat for Joe Average.
Chips are served with your burrito along with a dish of green salsa (avocado base). However, there is also a separate salsa bar with at least 4 other salsas plus jalapenos. The second green salsa (tomatillo base) was quite tasty, but the red pico-de-gallo tasted somewhat stale.
If more care is taken (and guacamole actually included), these could be some very fine burritos. It's worth a second look. But for now, i think this qualifies as a 6.
