Taqueria Los Altos (Concord, CA)
Score: 6.5 / 10 Reviewed by: Chris
This place is actually Los Altos Taqueria 2. I don't know where number 1 is, but hopefully it's better. It's located in a strip mall, difficult to see from Willow Pass Road. It is a nice place, but seems more interested in pushing through customers than taking a few extra moments to make a proper burrito.
This is quite possibly the messiest burrito i've ever had. I went with the super chile verde. It came to my table, and seemed nice and large, but was already dripping green sauce through the foil. My first bite- nothing but tortilla. Second bite- tortilla and sour cream. The entire first quarter was just sour cream. Finally, i found some other ingredients. The chile verde itself was acceptable, but usually drowned out by far too much sour cream. In contrast, the guacamole was sparse. Throughout all of this, i was constantly dealing with green juice dripping all over my hands. I went through more napkins here than i have in my last 10 burritos combined.
They do have a nice salsa bar, if a bit messy. There are 4 salsas- 2 green and 2 red. In addition, they have big (seriously) slices of jalapenos, onions, and radishes. The chips are self-serve, and are saltier than most taqueria chips. But they're pretty good.
A super here costs an even $6- no tax added. A decent price if the thing was put together properly. A regular burrito is only 50 cents less.
Los Altos has potential to be decent. But the complete disregard for integration is a major flaw. If they'd just put some time and care into their burritos, it'd earn back at least a whole point.
