Taqueria Pupuseria (San Mateo, CA)
Score: 4.5 / 10 Reviewed by: Chris
Yet another taqueria in downtown San Mateo, Pupuseria is a very small place built into a grocery store. It's inferior to the serious competition surrounding it on all sides, but is dirt cheap if you're on a tight budget.
Entering Pupuseria, you immediately find yourself beside the counter. No menus are immediately visible, and until you find one (other side of the register), you can't be sure of what you can order.
Pupuseria has most of the usual burrito menu choices, but does not have any chicken. My last trip i was unable to get an Al Pastor despite it's presence on the menu. Burrito integration here is not good at all. Ingredients appeared in layers- first you'll taste nothing but sour cream, then you'll find sauce, then finally the scarce meat. My friend's chile verde did seem to have a better helping of meat, however.
Chips and green salsa come with your burrito. The dark yellow chips (apparently store bought) are bland, but the green salsa isn't bad. There is no salsa bar.
The super burrito here is only $4.50, but these aren't as stuffed as most other places. The regular burrito (no guacamole, sour cream or cheese) is $3.99.
If you're on a very tight budget, Pupuseria may not be a bad choice. But if you can spend a buck or two more you can walk any direction to much better places.
