The Burrito Files

The Burritophiles pontificate about all things burrito.

John Candy would be proud. While in Anaheim for the California Association of Realtors conference (motto: “There’s no business like slow business”) I had some time to kill between setup and the start of the show. Like any good burritophile at a hotel, I called up the concierge and asked if he knew of a place within walking distance where I could get a decent burrito.

He asked if I had a car, because then he could give me directions to an excellent burrito joint. Alas, I was confined by my feet. Instead of an excellent burrito joint, he gave me directions to Casa Garcia, which was an easy 15-minute jaunt along Harbor Boulevard, left on Chapman.

Casa Garcia is a restaurant, but they let me order at the front counter, and gave me some chips and salsa at a table anyway. I ordered the Texas Burrito (why they would serve a Texas Burrito in SoCal is beyond me. It’s like serving North Dakota Barbecue in Kansas City.), which arrived very mojado, and full of carnitas, beans and a couple picos de gallo. Large blob of guac on the side.

Pretty tasty for my $7.95. What had really grabbed me on the menu, however, was the King Burrito: “5 lbs of meat, cheese, beans, rice, lettuce, onion, tomato and guacamole. $14.95. If you finish it, it’s on us!!” I asked the manager how often people had come through and finished the King. His answer was a classic:

“I’ve been working here just over 20 years. I’ve seen maybe five people finish the King.” I laughed, and he continued, “They come back the next day, and they tell me they don’t feel so good—it’s just too much food for one stomach.”

That should be someone’s slogan, perhaps Claim Jumper: “Too much food for just one stomach.”
